JYE LABS practical guide

Convert WebP to transparent PNG or JPG with a custom background

Use this free browser tool when a document, store listing, or editor needs PNG or JPG instead of WebP. Keep transparent edges in PNG or flatten them onto a chosen JPG background. Image files stay in your browser during conversion.

Before you start

Original .webp files and a current browser
Decide whether you need transparency or JPG
Keep originals and try a small batch first

Step-by-step

  1. Choose PNG or JPG

PNG keeps full and partial transparency. JPG produces an opaque image with background fill. PNG does not restore detail already lost in a lossy WebP.

  2. Set JPG background and quality

Choose a preset or custom background. Quality ranges from 10% to 100%, with 75%, 85%, 92%, and 100% presets. A 100% setting does not make JPEG lossless.

  3. Add WebP files

Choose Select WebP Files or drop files into the upload area. Multiple files convert automatically. Paste works when the clipboard provides actual WebP files.

  4. Compare results

Check each status and before/after size. Click a thumbnail to compare the original and result. Changing settings converts files again. PNG can be larger than the source.

  5. Download and check

Save one PNG/JPG or use Download All as .ZIP. Only successful files are included. Duplicate names are numbered. Extract the ZIP and check the count before sharing.

Worked example

Illustrative example

Save a transparent product cutout in two formats

Add a transparent WebP and save a PNG. Then choose JPG, White background, and 92% quality and save again. Check transparent PNG edges and JPG edges blended onto white. Compare dimensions, quality, and byte size.

Check the result

  • Check extension, image dimensions, and orientation.
  • Check PNG transparency and JPG background, edges, and text clarity.
  • Extract the ZIP and confirm every successful image opens.

Limits and tips

  • Each image is limited to 25 megapixels. Batch capacity depends on device memory; processing is not unlimited.
  • Animated WebP exports one still image. Animation preservation and frame selection are unsupported.
  • Resizing, target byte sizes, and complete EXIF/HDR/color-profile preservation are not promised.
  • Processing and ZIP creation run locally. Page delivery, fonts, and performance analytics can make separate network requests. Save before closing the page.
  • iPhone/Safari hardware and batches of fifty 25MP originals have not been verified. Start with a few files.

Questions

Why is my .webp reported as HTML or PNG?

The extension may not match the data. Save the actual WebP image and retry. Failed files do not stop other valid files.

Why does pasting fail?

The clipboard may contain PNG instead of WebP. Select or drop the original WebP file.

Why is PNG larger?

PNG and WebP use different compression. If transparency is unnecessary, try JPG and compare quality settings.

Is it free without an account?

Yes. No signup or paid conversion API is required, and images are not uploaded for processing.

Does 100% JPG perfectly preserve the original?

No. JPEG is lossy and cannot restore detail already lost in WebP. Compare the result and file size.
